The innovations in the ridesharing industry have sparked a wave of new on demand apps. Lyft and Uber have paved the way with a new kind of business model. It’s opened the doors to on demand delivery, dog-walking, babysitting and countless other services.
Today we’ll take a look at Dolly, an on demand moving service that offers truck owners and anyone capable of lifting 75 lbs or more an opportunity to make some extra cash in their spare time.
So how exactly does it work?
Dolly connects people that are moving with helpers that can do the move for them. The app allows people to schedule their move flexibly and get a very affordable price.
Movers get all the traditional benefits of the on-demand economy (flexible work hours and no-boss). Dolly also boasts pay rates of $30 plus per hour for movers that have their own truck. When you compare that rate to other on-demand services it is very competitive.
Do you need a truck to become a Dolly helper?
In short, no. You can apply to Dolly as a helper or a hand. Helpers have a pickup truck, box truck or cargo van and can lift up to 75 pounds. Hands can lift up to 75 pounds but do not bring a truck to the table.
The difference?
Advertised pay rates are $30 plus per hour for helpers and $15 plus per hour for hands.
How do I sign up?
I went through the signup process myself before writing this article, and it was very easy to do. You can apply for yourself here. You fill out some quick info about yourself (name, address, email, phone, DOB). You then fill out info about your car.
You’ll also have to fill out some scheduling info as to when you’re typically available to work (this seems odd for an on-demand application, but it’s easy to do).
There are a few other questions such as how you heard about the position? Can you lift 75 lbs above your head Do you have a smartphone?
If you were referred by a friend, input their name in “how you heard about the position”. This is especially important if you apply as a hand, but you know someone who is already a helper. They will be able to pull you into jobs that can only be landed by helpers with a truck.
The next page asks for a picture of you and drivers licence info. If you are applying as a helper you will need to enter more details about your truck.
That’s it! Response times are quick, I heard back about my application in the next day.
Updates
As I said, I’ll be updating this article with information on my experience as a Dolly hand. I’ll also be interviewing a friend of mine who has signed up as a helper. I’ll cover everything from average payouts, experience and any hacks that may make the job easier for beginners. Interested in other on-demand employment opportunities?
